Skin Biopsy & Excision

Skin biopsy is a simple procedure performed to remove a skin lesion or to collect the sample of a skin lesion for investigation in a laboratory. The sample is removed from the skin lesion in very small amount and sent to the lab for various issues. At Anew advanced aesthetic day care centre, our expert aesthetic surgeon performs skin biopsy with utmost care and precision. Skin biopsy helps to determine skin cancer when an area of the skin has an abnormal change in color, shape, size or form.

Skin biopsy helps to determine the cause of skin lesion and also to understand the morphology and structural composition if skin lesions and include:

  • altering moles
  • rashes
  • chronic skin infection
  • noncancerous growths
  • pre-cancerous cells
  • indications of skin cancer
  • blistering skin conditions

How Is A Skin Biopsy Performed?

The technique used to obtain a biopsy sample depends on the size, type, and location of the skin lesion. The aesthetic surgeon initiates the procedure by administering anesthetic to ease pain and discomfort during the biopsy procedure. Techniques used for skin biopsy include:

  • Shave biopsy: in this technique, the outermost layers of your skin lesion are removed using a blade or scalpel.
  • Punch biopsy: punch biopsy uses a tube-like instrument to obtain the sample. The skin is removed and using the sharp edge of the tool sample is taken and the incision stitched and closed.
  • Excisional biopsy: this method removes the entire lesion.
  • Incisional biopsy: used to remove a small part of a large skin lesion.
  • Curettage: performed for superficial skin lesions to remove and sample lesions with a cautery.

After the biopsy, the incision or wound will be covered and bandaged.

Excision

Excision refers to complete removal of a skin lesion by cutting it off from the skin.
Excision of a skin lesion is necessary when the lesion is in pre-cancerous or in a cancerous stage. This excision of the skin lesion removes the chances of spread of the disease condition to other parts of the body. Another reason for the excision of the skin lesion includes cosmetic appearance.

Elliptical excision is a common method of removing skin lesion. The aesthetic surgeon initiates the excision process by administering anesthetic to put the patient in a relaxed state and to numb the targeted area. The area under the skin lesion is cut around using a scalpel and scissors along with the lesion. After removing the lesion, the bleeding is stopped using a cautery. The skin edges of the area are stitched together. The incision is then covered with a sterile dressing and bandaged.
