lentigo

A lentigo is a small pigmented spot on the skin with a clearly defined edge, surrounded by normal-appearing skin

Lentigo is the medical term for a skin condition commonly known as liver spots. Lentigo (or liver spots) are flat spots on your skin that are darker than your usual skin tone. They’re not itchy or painful. They’re also not dangerous.

Lentigo is a pigmented flat or slightly raised lesion with a clearly defined edge. Unlike an ephelis (freckle), it does not fade in the winter months. There are several kinds of lentigo.

CAUSES

Common forms of lentigo are due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation:

  • Sun damage including sunburn
  • Indoor tanning
  • Phototherapy, especially photochemotherapy (PUVA)

Symptoms of lentigo simplex

Lentigo simplex can occur anywhere on your limbs, body, or mucous membranes. Unlike other types of lentigo, lentigo simplex can appear at birth or in childhood. The spots don’t cause pain or itchiness and are benign, meaning that they don’t develop into skin cancer.

Lentigo simplex spots usually have these characteristics:

  • round or oval shape
  • 3-15 mm in diameter
  • dark brown or black colour
  • jagged or smooth edge

Lentigo simplex spots may occasionally be mistaken for freckles. However, unlike freckles, lentigo simplex spots don’t change colour when exposed to sunlight. They also aren’t generally found in clusters.

Risks may include: redness, swelling, scarring or change in pigmentation. Be sure to consult with your treatment provider before choosing this treatment.

Q Switched Nd:YAG laser

Q-switch laser by Lumenis is the most effective laser treatment for hyperpigmentation. The procedure involves using a Q Switched laser that reduces the melanin production from different layers of the skin, and helps to correct irregularities of pigment in the skin.

In skin toning, multiple passes of low-dose Q-Switched Nd:YAG are delivered through a large spot size to induce sublethal injury to melanosomes causing fragmentation and rupture of melanin granules into the cytoplasm. This effect is highly selective for melanosomes and leads to overall skin brightness

The Lumenis Q-Switched Nd:YAG was developed to enable skin toning, by treatment of pigmented lesions, using a large and non-disposable tip of 6mm. Using a top-hat beam profile ensures control of homogeneous energy delivery and maximum safety without hot-spots nor any risk of side effects or complication for the patient.

Pigmented lesions are hypermelanocytic areas typically induced by sun exposure, the natural aging process or congenital factors.

Excellent solution for skin toning: dark spot & tattoo removal, pigmented lesions treatment. Enhanced technologies provide safety & efficacy procedures. 7 spot sizes for the most satisfying results ever!
