What is cosmelan ?

Cosmelan peel is one of the most effective skin lightening treatments. It can reduce up to 95% of pigmentation skin issues caused by too much melanin. It is truly a unique procedure with chemical ingredients that reduce and eliminate the areas of skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation. Cosmelan peel is definitely a high-quality depigmentation facial peel.

It can address all kinds of pigmentation like sun and age spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma and freckles. It reduces surface pigment and is followed by a strict after-care protocol that reduces pigment in 3 months. This process reduces the overproduction of melanin at the melanocyte so it actually targets pigment at its source.

Both men and women have these aesthetic concerns. Pigmentation can be caused by sun exposure , genetics or other factors. These unattractive dark blemishes can appear on the face or hands and significantly diminish people’s self-confidence.

How does it work?

Cosmelan contains an exclusive combination of active substances with proven efficacy, which act on all phases of the hyperpigmentation process totally eliminating existing hyperpigmentation. An all-round, effective result.

It acts by stopping the melanosome from transferring to the keratinocytes, preventing the pigment from reaching the superficial layers of the skin.

Is it painful?

The treatment is painless. The patient will only feel some mild to moderate discomfort post treatment with peeling and dryness in certain areas.

Is there any downtime?

Possibility of itching, tightness, redness, swelling, and skin peeling for 7-14 days.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects with Cosmelan treatments are rare but easily managed. Some skins may feel a little red following removal of the in-clinic mask. This may be accompanied by some minor dryness and flaking. Any tightness may be easily relieved by applying a nurturing moisturiser such as Hydra-Vital Factor K – which is supplied in your post treatment homecare pack.

It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure following a Cosmelan treatment and to wear a broad spectrum SPF30 every day before, during and following treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

One session

How long does the procedure take?

Around 15 minutes

When can I see the results?

This can be in as little as 2 weeks post treatment or may even be 4-8 weeks post treatment depending on skin condition and concerns. Maintenance of pigmentation will always be needed due to external and internal factors.

Will my pigmentation or melasma return?

As successful as our results are with our Cosmelan procedure, Melasma is a form of hormonal pigmentation which unfortunately is out of our control. We would never guarantee that your melasma will be gone forever. We tackle the pigmentation from all angles by ensuring the corrective skincare is always being used, clinical maintenance treatments are followed whilst also referring to a naturopath to treat internally.

COSMELAN AND LASER TREATMENTS

Laser is a commonly used, highly effective treatment for skin hyperpigmentation. It is particularly effective for low and medium phototype skins (I-III) where hyperpigmentation is more visible on the skin surface. However, the professional must recommend a maintenance treatment to the patient to prevent the reappearance of the spots. The combination of laser treatment and the “cosmelan method” home maintenance regime makes the treatment more successful, by correcting and controlling excess melanin production; providing both a short and long-term solution.

In higher phototypes (IV-VI), laser is less effective and the likelihood of triggering an HIP is higher. In such cases, the home method should be used before and after laser treatment to keep the dark spots under control. Moreover, in patients at high risk of PIH, we recommend you consider using the cosmelan method rather than laser, which is better tolerated, more efficient and involves a lower risk of recurrence and a longer-lasting result.
